BE HONEST – HOW MANY THINGS THAT YOU ABSOLUTELY HAVE TO DO ARE YOU NOT GETTING DONE?
AND MORE IMPORTANT – WHY?
I have to to clear my desk.
I have to finish the report, call Mr. Whats-His-Name about whatever, clear the garage, get to the gym….
I should visit aunt Sadie, learn to relax, make more time for my family, eat better, sleep more….
And so on and so forth…
Most of us live by an on-going, always lengthening list of things we absolutely have to do – now. And to get it all done we create a our very own inner drill sergeant who orders and rages and threatens and blames.
The question is – does it work – all this screaming at ourselves?
And the answer is, no. Not at all.
In fact, as an M.O. for getting things done – ‘have to’ & ‘should’ are totally ineffective. The very things we tell ourselves that we ‘have to’ and ‘should do’ most, tend to be the very things we put off doing the longest. Our inner drill sergeant only creates resistance.
So – why not try a different approach?
Why not try talking ‘nice’ to yourself….
It’s a simple practice.
For every ‘I HAVE TO’ and every ‘I SHOULD’ substitute ‘I WANT TO.‘
Try it out.
I want to clear to my desk; I want to finish the report; I want to visit Aunt Sadie, spend more time with my family, finish the report, eat healthier, find time to relax …and so on….
Changes things, doesn’t it?
I’ve found this one simple word change – ‘have’ and ‘should’ to ‘want’ – has a magical, energizing power. It appears that when you stop ordering yourself around, stop the inner screaming, urgency and – ultimately – recriminations – you actually start listening to your self. And – this is really mind-blowing – you actually start enjoying doing the things you’ve spent so many miserable, guilty hours avoiding.
Now, doing what you want to do is called enjoying life….
Which, when all is said and done, is what we all want to do…
